17th CENTURY OVERPAINTED PANEL

Research carried out on an overpainted panel (made from reused wood) which contains painted 17th-century parts of the ceiling of Princess Amalia van Solms’ bedchamber in one of the royal palaces in The Netherlands. The research was carried out in collaboration with experts of the Rijksmuseum.
The project was aimed at understanding the appearance of the 17th century painting beneath the thick lead white overpaint. To achieve this, the following research methods were used: documentary research; IR-reflectography (OSIRIS camera); X-Ray photography and microscopic analysis of paint samples. The modern paint layers were (locally) mechanically removed to uncover the 17th-century painting. The results were presented on a symposium and documented in a treatment report.
