18th CENTURY WINDOW BLINDS ~ ALKMAAR

Preliminary research on four overpainted window shutters from an 18th-century monument (het Moriaanshoofd) in Alkmaar. The research was aimed on creating a method to remove the cross-linked lead white overpaint and understanding the appearance of the 18th century painting underneath the modern paint layers. To achieve this, the following research methods were used: documentary research; stratigraphic paint research; X-Ray photography and microscopic analysis of paint samples. The modern paint layers were (locally) mechanically removed to uncover the 17th-century painting. The results were presented on a symposium and documented in a treatment report.
